TNPDS Mobile Number Change: Update Your Ration Card Number
You cannot change the registered mobile number yourself on tnpds.gov.in. The portal’s public services list has no option for it. The number is updated in person. You can do it at your ration shop, on its Point of Sale (PoS) device, or at a PDS grievance camp. The update is free.
Once the new number is linked, it becomes your login for every online TNPDS service.
[H2] Which Route Fits Your Situation?
Most people searching for this are in one of five situations. Find yours, then follow the matching section below.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You still use the old number but want a new one linked | Update it at your ration shop |
| You lost the old SIM or the number is switched off | Go to your ration shop or a grievance camp with your Aadhaar card |
| You don’t know which number is linked to your card | Check it first, using the methods further down |
| Your card has no mobile number at all | Ask your ration shop to register one |
| The shop says it cannot make the change | Go to the monthly PDS grievance camp or your Taluk Supply Office |
Almost every card already has a number on record. The portal’s counters in November 2026 showed 2,29,75,964 registered mobile numbers against 2,29,78,076 family cards. So for most families, the task is replacing a number, not adding one.
[H2] Update Your Number at the Ration Shop
Your fair price shop (நியாய விலைக் கடை) is the quickest place to change the number. The portal’s own login page names the shopkeeper’s PoS device as one of the official ways a mobile number gets registered.
Carry these with you
- Your smart family card
- Aadhaar card of the member going to the shop
- The phone with the new SIM, switched on, because the confirmation comes to it
Steps
- Visit your ration shop during its working hours. A member whose name is on the card should go, because the PoS device identifies cardholders by fingerprint.
- Tell the salesperson you want to update the registered mobile number (கைபேசி எண்) on your card.
- Give your fingerprint on the PoS device when asked.
- Give the new 10-digit mobile number.
- Wait for the SMS confirming the update on your new phone before you leave.
The same device handles fingerprint verification. If any member is still pending, complete Aadhaar e-KYC at the ration shop on the same visit.
Asianet News Tamil reported this shop process, and the confirming SMS, in July 2026.
[H2] If the Shop Cannot Change It: Use the PDS Grievance Camp
The Civil Supplies department holds special grievance camps where staff update mobile numbers along with other card changes. Go there if the shop’s device shows an error or the salesperson cannot help.
In Chennai, camps run at all 19 zonal Assistant Commissioner offices, from 10 am to 1 pm. Mobile number registration and updates are listed among the services. Carry your currently registered phone if you still have it, since requests at the camp are processed with OTP verification.
In other districts, camps are held at taluk offices, under the Civil Supplies Special Tahsildar and the Taluk Supply Office. Many districts hold them on the second Saturday of each month. Check your district collectorate’s official website, which ends in nic.in, for the next date.

Between camps, you can also visit your Taluk Supply Office (வட்ட வழங்கல் அலுவலர்) during working hours. In Chennai, go to your zonal Assistant Commissioner’s office. If an earlier request has not been acted on, call 1967 or 1800-425-5901 with your card details ready.
[H2] Why There Is No “Change Mobile Number” Button Online
The tnpds.gov.in homepage lists every self-service option, and mobile number change is not one of them. The card services listed are Add Member, Change of Address, Family Head Member Change, Remove Family Member and Add Authorised Person. All of these open only after you log in with your registered number.
That explains the dead end many people hit. You need the registered number to log in, so a lost number cannot be replaced through the same login.
Some websites show an online “update mobile number” form. Those screenshots come from other states’ food department portals, such as Delhi or Karnataka, not Tamil Nadu. There is also no official mobile number change form to download for Tamil Nadu. The change is made on the shop’s device or by department staff at the camp.
[H2] Find Out Which Mobile Number Is Linked to Your Card
If you are unsure which number is on your card, there are two ways to check it.
Try logging in. Open Citizen Login (பயனாளர் நுழைவு) and enter the number you think is linked. The portal sends an OTP only to the number registered with your ration card. If the OTP arrives, that is your number.
Call the helpline. Ring 1967 or the toll-free number 1800-425-5901 and ask which number is on record for your card.
Once the number works, use it for TNPDS login with your registered mobile. You can then view your card, family details and entitlement.
[H2] What “Registration” Means on TNPDS
There is no separate sign-up page or new user registration form on tnpds.gov.in. You become a registered user as soon as a mobile number is linked to your ration card.
The portal’s login page lists the three ways that happens:
- The shopkeeper registers your number on the ration shop’s PoS device
- You register through the official TNePDS mobile app
- You register through the tnpds.gov.in portal
After that, your mobile number is your username. There is no password; each login uses a captcha code and an OTP sent to that number.
The official app is available from the Google Play Store link on the portal. Avoid APK files from other websites.
[H2] No Registered Mobile Number? What Still Works
You can keep collecting rations without a linked mobile number. Your fair price shop verifies cardholders by fingerprint on the PoS device, not by phone.
What you lose without a registered number:
- Logging in to tnpds.gov.in or the app to view your card and transactions
- Online requests such as Add Member or Change of Address
- SMS services, such as checking shop stock by sending PDS 101 to 8939922990
- Downloading your card details as a PDF
So link a working number on your next shop visit, even if you rarely use online services.
[H2] After the Update: Test It Before You Need It
Log in once with the new number within a day or two of the change. If the OTP comes through, the update is complete.
Changed the number but still no OTP? Here’s what to do with the OTP not arriving on your phone. If staff confirmed the change and it still fails after a few days, call 1967. Keep your smart card number ready.
[H2] Two Questions People Ask About the Change
[H3] Is there a fee to change the mobile number on a TNPDS card?
No. Updating the registered mobile number at the ration shop or a PDS grievance camp is free. Don’t pay anyone who offers to change it online for you.
[H3] Can I update the number in Tamil?
Yes. Ask at the shop or camp for கைபேசி எண் மாற்றம் (mobile number change) on your card. The tnpds.gov.in portal also has a தமிழ் button at the top for reading the site in Tamil.
