TNPDS Duplicate Smart Card: Replace a Lost Ration Card
Losing your smart family card does not stop your rations. Your fair price shop identifies cardholders by fingerprint on its PoS device. So any member on the card can still collect. A replacement card can be requested online on tnpds.gov.in, for a small fee.
[H2] A Downloaded Copy or an Official Duplicate?
Two different things are called a “duplicate” ration card. Choose the one that fits what you need.
| Downloaded copy | Official duplicate smart card | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Your card details as a PDF you print yourself | A new printed smart card from the department |
| How | Log in on tnpds.gov.in and save your card details | Apply through Duplicate Smart Card on tnpds.gov.in |
| Cost | Free | A small fee (see below) |
| Time | Minutes | Printing and delivery take time |
| Best for | Showing proof today, for a school or a scheme | Replacing a lost, damaged or outdated card |
If you only need proof of your card right now, download your smart card as a PDF after logging in. Apply for the official duplicate as well if the physical card is gone or damaged.
[H2] Before You Apply
The Duplicate Smart Card service (நகல் மின்னணு குடும்ப அட்டை விண்ணப்பிக்க) opens only after Citizen Login. The OTP goes to the mobile number registered with your card.
If that number is switched off or lost, start with registering your current mobile number. You can do it at your ration shop or a PDS grievance camp, and then apply.
[H2] How to Apply for a Duplicate Smart Card Online
- On the tnpds.gov.in homepage, click Duplicate Smart Card under Duplicate Smart Card. The portal opens the Citizen Login page.
- Enter your registered mobile number and the captcha code, then click Submit.
- Enter the OTP sent to your phone and click Submit.
- Give the reason you need a new card, such as lost or damaged.
- Choose whether you want the card sent by post.
- Pay the fee online and submit.
- Save the reference number sent to your registered mobile.

[H2] What It Costs and How the Card Reaches You
A duplicate card costs ₹20 online. If you choose delivery by post, there is a ₹25 postal charge, making ₹45 in total. Both are paid online when you apply.
Daily Thanthi reported these charges from a 2022 order of the Cooperative, Food and Consumer Protection Department. The payment screen shows the amount that applies today, so check it there.
Before postal delivery began, the ₹20 was paid at the taluk office, and the card was collected there. If you don’t choose the post, ask your Taluk Supply Office where to collect the new card.
e-Sevai centres also take this request, as “Re-Print of Smart card Application” (PDS-506). The centre adds its own service charge.
[H2] Updating Details? Change First, Reprint After
Some people want a new card because a name, member or address has changed. The duplicate card prints whatever is on record, so get the change approved first.
Once your Add Member, Remove Family Member or Change of Address request is approved, apply for the duplicate. The new card will then carry the updated details.
[H2] Track Your Duplicate Card Request
Use Duplicate Smart Card Status (நகல் மின்னணு குடும்ப அட்டை விண்ணப்பத்தின் நிலை) on the homepage. It is a separate page from the status page for new cards.
- Open Duplicate Smart Card Status.
- Enter the Reference Number sent to your registered mobile when you applied.
- Click Submit.
Keep the SMS until the new card is in your hands. The reference number is the only thing the status page accepts.
[H2] If the Login Page Won’t Let You In
If the portal or OTP fails at the first step, the problem is with login, not the duplicate service. See what to do when you find Citizen Login not loading.
If you have the reference number but the card has not arrived after several weeks, call 1967 or 1800-425-5901. You can also visit your Taluk Supply Office (வட்ட வழங்கல் அலுவலர்) or, in Chennai, your zonal Assistant Commissioner’s office. Take the reference number and the payment receipt.
