TNPDS e-KYC: Fingerprint Verification for Ration Card

By 30 September 2026, 96.69% of PHH and AAY cardholders in Tamil Nadu had finished e-KYC. If someone on your card is still pending, it is done at a fair price shop. It is free and needs a fingerprint or an iris scan.

[H2] Who on Your Card Needs e-KYC

Every member of a PHH or AAY card needs it, not just the head of the family. The tnpds.gov.in homepage asks all members of these cards to complete e-KYC by biometric verification.

e-KYC matches each member on your card with their Aadhaar record. The check is done on the ration shop’s PoS device, using the member’s fingerprint or iris. Priority Household and Antyodaya members are covered by the National Food Security Act. That is why their verification is tracked.

[H2] What Happens at the Ration Shop

You can do e-KYC on a normal ration day, at the shop counter. The update is free.

  1. Take every member who still needs e-KYC to the fair price shop (நியாய விலைக் கடை). Each person must be there, because the scan is of their own finger or eye.
  2. Tell the salesperson you want e-KYC done for those members.
  3. Each member places a finger on the PoS device’s scanner. If it does not match, try another finger.
  4. If fingerprints keep failing, ask for an iris scan (கண்கருவிழி சரிபார்ப்பு).
  5. Ask the salesperson whether each member’s e-KYC went through.

You do not need your home shop. The portal’s notice says you can use the nearest fair price shop, even in another district or state. The Centre told Parliament on 11 August 2026 that e-KYC can be done at any fair price shop in India.

[H2] There Is No e-KYC Button on tnpds.gov.in

Many people search for online e-KYC or a KYC update on the portal. The tnpds.gov.in service list has no e-KYC option, so the shop’s biometric device is the way to do it.

The Centre’s National Informatics Centre runs a face-authentication app called Mera eKYC. We found no Tamil Nadu government notice telling cardholders to use it for their cards. Until the state says so, rely on the shop.

Don’t pay a browsing centre or an app to “update KYC” for your ration card. The state’s own notices say the update is free at the shop.

[H2] When Your Fingerprint Won’t Match

Fingerprint failure holds many people up. In 2026, the match threshold on ration shop PoS devices was raised from 40% to 90%. Elderly members waited in long queues as scans failed. Manual workers with worn fingertips face the same problem, and capturing biometrics of children under five is hard.

Try these, in this order:

  • Iris scan at the shop. The portal’s notice lists iris as an accepted method alongside fingerprint.
  • A different finger, with dry hands. Shop staff say sweaty fingers often fail to scan.
  • Update your fingerprints in Aadhaar. Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre and ask for a biometric update. It costs ₹125 for adults. It is free for the mandatory updates at ages 5 to 7 and 15 to 17. Once the new fingerprints are in Aadhaar, try e-KYC at the shop again.
  • Call 1967 or 1800-425-5901 if none of these works, and ask what your shop should do next.

[H2] “Aadhaar Update” and “Link Aadhaar”: Two Different Jobs

Linking Aadhaar to the ration card means the member’s Aadhaar number is stored on the card. Most already are: the portal showed 6,96,35,613 Aadhaar numbers registered against 7,02,27,801 beneficiaries in November 2026.

You can see each member’s Aadhaar number after Citizen Login on tnpds.gov.in. That needs the mobile number linked to your ration card. Is a member’s Aadhaar number missing or wrong there? Raise it at your ration shop, Taluk Supply Office or a PDS grievance camp.

Updating Aadhaar itself (your name, date of birth, address or fingerprints) is done with UIDAI, not on tnpds.gov.in. A demographic update costs ₹75 and a biometric update ₹125, at an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

[H2] Will Your Card Be Blocked Without e-KYC?

No, not for e-KYC alone. On 30 September 2026, the state ordered that no cardholder’s essential goods be stopped just because e-KYC is pending. The order went to all Taluk Supply Officers and Assistant Commissioners.

This followed a central order to temporarily deactivate some PHH and AAY cards. It covered cards unused for six months, and cards of members who had died, moved or were found to be fake. Such cards get three months to prove eligibility, including through e-KYC.

So keep buying rations as usual, and finish e-KYC on your next visit.

[H2] A Member Who Has Passed Away

e-KYC cannot be completed for someone who has died. Their name stays pending until it is taken off the card. Here is how removing a deceased member works, using the death certificate.

[H2] Quick Answers

[H3] Does e-KYC cost anything?

No. Fingerprint or iris e-KYC at the ration shop is free. Only an Aadhaar biometric update at an Aadhaar centre has a fee, if you need one.

[H3] I live in another state. Do I have to come back?

No. You can do e-KYC at a fair price shop near where you live, even outside Tamil Nadu. The portal’s notice and the Centre’s August 2026 reply both say so.

[H3] How do I know my e-KYC is done?

There is no e-KYC status page on tnpds.gov.in. Ask the salesperson at the time of the scan.
