TNPDS Add Member: Add a Name to Your Ration Card Online
[H2] Check These Two Things Before You Apply
Two things decide whether you can add a member online. Check both before you open tnpds.gov.in.
1. Your ration card has a working registered mobile number. Add Member opens only after Citizen Login. The login OTP goes to the number registered with your card. If that number has changed, update it at your ration shop before you start.
2. The person is not on any other ration card. A name can sit on one family card only. A newly married woman, for example, must first be removed from her parents’ card. Only then can she be added to her husband’s.
If both are fine, you can apply online. If not, fix that first, or use the grievance camp route further down.
[H2] Documents to Keep Ready for Each Type of Member
What you upload depends on who you are adding. This list is based on reporting by Malai Murasu in October 2026. The portal shows the exact upload list once you open the form, so check it there.
| Adding | Main document | Also keep ready |
|---|---|---|
| A newborn or young child | Birth certificate from the hospital or local body | The child’s Aadhaar, if issued; parents’ Aadhaar |
| A wife or husband after marriage | Marriage certificate | Proof the name was removed from the earlier card; their Aadhaar |
| Another adult family member | Aadhaar card | Voter ID or bank passbook, if the form asks for it |
Scan each document clearly before you begin, so the upload goes through on the first try.
If your child does not have an Aadhaar number yet, ask at your Taluk Supply Office before applying. That way you know whether the birth certificate alone will be accepted for your request.
[H2] Steps to Add a Member on tnpds.gov.in
You apply through Add Member (உறுப்பினரை சேர்க்க), listed under Smart Card Related Services on the portal’s homepage.
- Open the tnpds.gov.in homepage and click Add Member. The portal takes you to the Citizen Login page.
- Enter your 10-digit registered mobile number and the captcha code, then click Submit.
- Enter the OTP sent to your phone and click Submit again.
- Fill in the new member’s details. News reports say the form asks for the name in English and Tamil, date of birth, gender and relationship.
- Upload the supporting document for that member.
- Check every detail against the document, then submit the request.
- Save the reference number that arrives by SMS. You need it to check progress.
Spell the name exactly as it appears on the birth certificate or Aadhaar card, so the details match during verification.

[H2] “Urupinar Serkai” and Other Names for This Service
Many people search for this service in Tamil words typed in English. They are all asking for the same thing.
- Urupinar serkai (உறுப்பினர் சேர்க்கை) means member addition. On the Tamil version of the portal, the button reads உறுப்பினரை சேர்க்க.
- Name join, name add or name inclusion are other ways of saying the same request.
- Family member add is also Add Member. There is no separate form for children or spouses.
So whichever phrase you know it by, the button to use is Add Member.
[H2] Adding Your Wife or Husband After Marriage
Adding a spouse takes two separate requests, in a fixed order. The first goes from the family whose card the spouse is leaving.
- The spouse’s parents (or whoever holds their earlier card) log in and request removal of the name. Here is how removing her name from her parents’ card works.
- Once that removal is approved, you log in on your own card and add the spouse through Add Member.
Keep the marriage certificate ready for both steps. Apply for the addition only after the removal is approved.
If your families live in different districts, call 1967 or 1800-425-5901 first. Ask which office handles each step for your two cards.
[H2] Checking Whether the Name Was Added
Use Card Related Service Request Status (அட்டை தொடர்பான சேவை நிலை அறிய) on the portal homepage. It is the right page for add-member requests, not Smart Card Application Status, which is for new cards.
- Click Card Related Service Request Status.
- Enter the Reference Number sent to your registered mobile when you made the request.
- Click Submit.
The homepage also explains how to track any TNPDS card request, including new cards and duplicates.
Recent news reports say approval takes from a few days to about a week after verification. If nothing moves after a week, visit your Taluk Supply Office (வட்ட வழங்கல் அலுவலர்) with the reference number. In Chennai, go to your zonal Assistant Commissioner’s office.

[H2] Can’t Apply Online? Use the PDS Grievance Camp
The Civil Supplies department runs grievance camps where staff take add-member requests in person. This helps if you cannot log in, or your online request has stalled.
- Chennai: all 19 zonal Assistant Commissioner offices, from 10 am to 1 pm.
- Other districts: taluk offices, under the Civil Supplies Special Tahsildar. Many districts hold them on the second Saturday of each month.
Take the member’s documents and the phone with your registered number. Requests at the camp are processed with OTP verification. Check your district collectorate’s website, which ends in nic.in, for the next camp date.

[H2] What Changes on Your Card After the Name Is Added
The new member appears in your card details when you log in. For rice cards, monthly rice is worked out by family size, so an extra member can raise your quantity. How much depends on your card type and how many people are already on the card.
There is one more step for PHH and AAY cards. The portal asks every member of these cards to complete e-KYC by fingerprint or iris scan at a fair price shop. You can do it at the nearest shop, even outside your district or state.
Once the name shows on your card, take the new member to the ration shop. Here is how e-KYC for the new member works.
